From the Land Beyond Beyond: The Films of Willis O'Brien and Ray Harryhausen

A Delightful Overview of the Golden Age of Fantasy Films

Ask any visual effects artist working in the bowels of Industrial Light & Magic who their childhood idols were, odds are that their most common replies would be Ray Harryhausen and Willis "Obie" O'Brien. The stop-motion creations of these cinema pioneers have sparked the imaginations of countless moviegoers, and provided imagery which serves as stunning landmarks in the history of filmmaking. From King Kong standing atop the Empire State Building, to the hulking Cyclops and scimitar-wielding skeleton of "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad", the cinematic creations of these two legendary artists have ingrained themselves into places of honor in our popular culture.

_From the Land Beyond Beyond_ is a splendid overview of the careers of these remarkable individuals, packed with photos and behind the scenes details on how Harryhausen and Obie brought these magical creatures to life. The book goes on to touch upon the early careers of some of the effects artists who were inspired by the Masters, who themselves have now gone on to occupy prominant positions in the industry. Together with _Ray Harryhausen's Film Fantasy Scrapbook_, this volume is an vital addition to the library of any fantasy film enthusiast.

Fury Beach: The Four Year Odyssey of Captain John Ross and the Victory
Published in Hardcover by Berkley Pub Group (01 April, 2003)
Author: Ray Edinger
Average review score:

Hip, Hip, Hurray or Fury Beach
Fury Beach by Ray Edinger combines thorough research with a rousing good story. The lengthy bibliography and index suggest the extensive research that went into producing this book. Well written, it is actually two stories for the price of one: a tale of an Arctic voyage of discovery and scientific research and the heart-warming story of the interaction of two cultures, an Inuit tribe and Englishmen, meeting for the first time and things actually go right. People treat each other with kindness and respect. Friendships result. I particularly liked the short snippets of biographies at the close of the book that explained what happened to the participants after the adventure ended. There are many illustrations, all charming.

Excellent Stories
This book is a wonderful find. These are stories about the cultural experiences of many characters on both sides of the border. There are many different stories that made me think and want to revisit later. They can also be read as time permits. Highly recommended.

Go MAD: Make a Difference
My daughter LOVED this book. Sometimes I would hear her laughing from the other room as she read it. She would even bring up some of the issues she read about during dinner. She said that even though it was written by adults, it was presented in "her language" (funny, I thought she spoke English like the rest of us). She really liked the chapters by Mark Bernstein and Keith Hawkins in particular. Thanks for a great read. Go MAD is great!

God Without the Myths

God Without The Myths
This book reveals truths not found in any books now on the market about how religion as we know it came in to existence. It should be required reading in all courses on religion. It explains how most rituals and myths actually came out of pagan theories of long dead shamans and mystics. A strange and wierd journey through the dark passages of history.

The Golden Age of American Lighthouses: A Nostalgic Look at U.S. Lights from 1850 to 1939
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (01 June, 2002)
Authors: Ray Jones and Tim Harrison

best lighthouse book ever written
This is the best lighthouse book I have ever read. It's jammed packed with information you would never find in any other lighthouse book. Strange and unusal tales, like the man who built many of our lighthouses and missed becoming presient by a matter of hours, or the man who ran our lighthouse service for 32 years is also the same man who saved the Declration of Independence. This is one lighthouse book you will want to have

The Gospel According to Judas: Is There a Limit to God's Forgiveness?
Published in Paperback by Fuller Seminary Bookstore (August, 2000)
Author: Ray S. Anderson
Average review score:

Eye-Opening Book on Forgiveness, Hope, and Ministry
Every Christian I've ever heard or read has condemned Judas to hell...until Anderson. Anderson's examination of both the Biblical story of Judas and Jesus' teaching on forgiveness demonstrate two things. Christians should have undying hope for everyone, even the worst of society; and Christians should minister Christ's love, even when it seem meaningless. This is an eye-opening book, and a must-read for anyone concerned about being Christ-like in today's world.

I had Ray Anderson as a seminary professor and his perspective on ministry is life-changing.

Maybe (possibly probably?) Judas is in heaven...doesn't that just blow your mind?

Grandparents

Authors: Roser Capdevila and Anne-Laure Fournier Le Ray
Average review score:

A must-have for every child's home library
Books about families are a must-have in a child's home library. Children love to hear stories about people who are just like those in their own families. "Grandparents!" provides such stories.

In this book, children will enjoy hearing and learning about different kinds of grandparents - where they live, what they do, how they help the family, and just how important they really are.

MyParenTime highly recommends the book, "Grandparents!" - it does a wonderful job of showing the many different roles that grandparents play. Also, the illustrations are colorful and entertaining, and the size is just right for a child's hands.

The Great Everlasting

where do we spend eternity
This is a magnificent book that spans three centuries. The historical facts are right on the money. The Indians are real in 1850 and in 2003. Morning Fawn is either the world's greatest trickster or she truly did live in 1867. Dan has to come to grips with the fact that he has fallen in love with a beautiful Crow woman who rode the plains before the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Together they fight their modern-day enemies as they are drawn inextricably toward the mysterious Death Camp of the Crow. The vivid imagery puts you on the back of a Crow war pony and in the plush leather seats of a sleek Lear Jet. This novel is in the same class as Ray's other books. You will love it.
